Ben Harper : "I
got really into Western shirts right around ’95. From
Western shirts to fancier Western shirts to Nudie suits
was just a three-step program. Being at the thrift store
at the right time when there was a Nudie piece at the right
price. Once you get on, you’re bit, and this whole
underworld of Nudie nostalgia opens up to you from Branson,
Missouri, to eBay to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I just got ahold
of a gold lamé paisleys Nudie suit. Just like the
Elvis suit but with paisleys on it. It’s beyond stunning."
(L.A. City Beat, 2003).
Ben Harper : "The rodeo tailor Nudie Cohn in North
Hollywood defined rock 'n' roll style. He made Elvis' gold
lamé suit. Western moved from cowboy boots and shirts
to what became the Nudie Cohn style. Gram Parsons is like
the signpost for that style. Gram was waving the Nudie flag
longer and louder than anyone." (Los Angeles Times
Magazine, 2005). |

Nudie Cohn (originally
named Nuta Kotlyarenko) was born December 15, 1902, in Kiev,
Ukraine. The "Rodeo Tailor" made his reputation
in Hollywood with, custom made to measure, short jacket
and pants suits of 100% wool gabardine, with orchid or western
theme embroideries, and rhinestone outlines. He designed
clothing for Roy Rogers, Johnny Cash, the Flying Burrito
Brothers, John Wayne, Steve McQueen, Elton John, Eric Clapton,
John Lennon... to name a few. He was also world-renowned
for the gold lamé suit he made for Elvis Presley.
Rhinestone : "A colorless artificial gem of paste or
glass, often with facets that sparkle in imitation of a
diamond. Word History : Although rhinestones are
inseparably associated with the costumes of country and
western singers and Las Vegas dancers, the word originally
had European associations. The Rhine in rhinestone is the
(French) Rhine River, and rhinestone is a translation into
English of the French phrase caillou du Rhin. Originally
a rhinestone was a kind of rock crystal that was found in
or near the Rhine. Other types of rock crystal, such as
Cornish diamond, were given similar fancy names. Because
rhinestones could be made to imitate diamonds, the name
rhinestone was applied to artificial gems made from paste,
glass, or gem quartz and as a result often carries a connotation
of showbiz glitz." — source : The
