Superior
Hawaiian Guitars are made in the style
of the original makers' instruments from the 1920's.
These instruments are hand made of all solid woods,
with a hollow neck. Starting at $825. |
|
Many professionals
are using these instruments for performing as well
as recording - David Lindley is the most notable.
David Lindley : "I scared myself by plugging
these things in after putting sunrises in them!
So good. So good. So good [...] These things really
have the perfect sound for a sunrise pickup. They
eat'em all and shit'em out I tell you." |

Photo : Maalaea
model with optional dual soundholes. |
|
Maalaea - The instrument's shape was inspired
by the Weissenborns of the 1920's. The similarity ends there
however, as the internal bracing pattern has been modified
to take advantage of the large resonating cavity, and several
additional design features have been altered/added such
as the offset soundhole(s) and "trap door". The
Maalaea is available with a single or double offset soundhole
which allows for modification of the top bracing, resulting
in increased volume and a more balanced tone. Traditionally
placed soundholes available at clients request. A "trap
door" (insert) at the butt of the instrument allows
for easy access to the interior and serves as a platform
for the mounting of electronics if desired. The model is
available in three styles. The featured instrument is a
Artist Series, with optional dual soundholes, trap door,
and koa peghead underlay.
Style 1: Mahogany or plain koa body; rosewood fingerboard;
wood binding around body only; rosewood bridge and bridge
pins; compensated bone saddle; bone nut; koa overlay on
peghead; Schaller tuners; high gloss finish. $3,500.
Artist Series: Highly figured koa body; koa or
rosewood fingerboard; maple and figured koa binding around
body, fingerboard, and peghead; rosewood bridge and bridge
pins; compensated bone saddle; koa overlay on front of peghead;
Schaller tuners with pearloid buttons; high gloss finish.
$4,000.
Kahu - This 'Kona' style instrument features
a round mahogany neck attached to the 'Weissenborn' style
body at the 7th fret. Available with an 'offset' or traditionally
placed soundhole; fretted or unftretted (with inlayed wood
fret markers). May be built for lap style or fretting/bottleneck
slide playing. The featured instrument has a body of figured
Hawiian koa; 7 fret mahogany neck with graphite support
rods; soundhole with turquoise rosette; figured koa and
maple binding; rosewood fingerboard with inlayed maple fret
markers; rosewood bridge and bridge pins with pearl dots;
and a high gloss lacquer finish. Prices start at $4,000. |

The Acousteel
is a modern redesign of the old Hawaiian acoustic
steel guitars of the 1920's. |
|
"The modern design and bracing patterns, combined with
highest quality materials and construction, produce an instrument
which goes beyond the short-lived promise of the older instruments.
I have also overcome many of the shortcomings of "resonator"
guitars-such as rattles, poor volume, and amplification.
These instruments will be able to take acoustic "steel
guitar" into all forms of music. I am making these
guitars with Koa back and sides, spruce face, ebony fingerboard,
Brazilian Rosewood bridge and Gold Schaller tuners with
Pearl Buttons."
Base price is $3,000 with a hard shell case.
