Australian timbers

Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon)
Excellent for back and sides sets. It grows from Tasmania to Queensland.
Maton uses Blackwood from a region known as the Otways. This timber is beginning to be highly valued abroad as it is almost identical to the traditional luthier timber, Acacia Koa, indigenous to Hawaii.

Silkwood (Flindersia brayleyana) also known as Queensland Maple.
Indigenous to the rainforests of north Queensland, this timber has proven to be excellent for use in the backs, sides and necks of acoustic guitars as well the body of electric guitars.
It is more fibrous than Mahogany, but very similar in appearance if lighter in colour.

Bunya (Araucaria bidwilli)
Spruce and Western Red Cedar are the traditional timbers for guitar soundboards. In the past Europe and North America had abundant Spruce and Cedar. Both timbers are relatively stable, light, soft and have excellent strength for weight characteristics. Bunya has a similar weight to Spruce yet is 20% stronger, it is related to one of the planet's oldest living species, Wollemi Pine (Araucariaceae Wollemia) wich was recently discovered growing in a very isolated valley in NSW. Bunya is also related to the Norfolk and Hoop Pine. Bunya displays excellent acoustic properties.
