Cole Clark : Lap Steels appeared commercially in the 1930’s, seemingly driven by an interest in Hawaiian music and slack key guitar. There were many manufacturers for 40 or so years, and then their light seemed to fade a little, except with collectors. Now, with the influences of David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) and contemporary players such as Ben Harper, lap steel guitars have again found their rightful place in the musical spotlight, having made the jump into a wide range musical styles. When you hear the new models of lap steel such as the Lap Dog (heavily influenced by such instruments as the Ricky Model ’59, but with modern techniques) and the Violap range which resonate visually (no pun intended) with the Weissenborns of the 1930’s, yet feature exact and advanced manufacturing techniques, you will understand why Lap Steel guitar is back to stay.

Violap A - The Cole Clark Violap features a hollow body, with internally carved top and back. The tone is at once strong yet sweet, the response from a tone bar lively and laconic, depending solely on your mood. This is the lap steel you’ll want to play in the small hours of the night, when the house is quiet, or when room service is closed. Physical balance is good, aided by the hollow neck design, the hourglass shape vaguely reminiscent of body shapes from the thirties. Light weight yet with great projection, the Violap could well be the voice of the Siren which seduces you into expanding your playing style. / Violap AP - The Violap Acoustic is also available with the Cole Clark Acoustic Pickup System (AP).
